“I advise everyone in this land to drink this wine, it will reconfigure the Bacchus landscape forever”.
Matthew Jukes - Wine Writer.

Block HH lies west of the oldest vineyard at Castlewood. 2Ha of Bacchus vines, clone Gf 1 were planted in 2016 on this warm, steep south-facing hillside.

Like the rest of Castlewood’s vineyards the vines are planted at low density. Three metre row widths allow air flow through the vineyard and help to prevent any row to row shading. Block HH’s steepness and aspect allows the grapes to achieve maximum sunlight hours throughout the season.

The 2023 vintage provided huge crop potential with excellent floral initiation from the previous vintage. Good bunch weights due to an extended summer with warmth and rain at the right times. As we approached harvest, we were experiencing unseasonably warm nights, meaning we had little diurnal temperature variation. Harvest took place on the 3rd of October. Fermentation and further aging for 22 months in oak barrels has allowed this wine to develop a sumptuous complexity whilst retaining crisp clarity within its varietal heritage.
